Parasitic Disease of Giardia and Coccodia
PUBLIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS:
Giardia is the most common intestinal parasite of people in North America (contaminates water supply) & (it is unclear how host specific Giardia species are, so cross-contamination between humans & animals is considered possible). Disinfections of cysts on premises can best be accomplished by use of quaternary ammonia compounds (e.g. Roccal). Chlorine disinfection in public drinking water is not effective...
from GEORGIS' PARASITOLOGY FOR VETERINARIANS:
pp. 83-85 GIARDIA TREATMENT: Dogs may be treated for giardiasis using
fenbendazole (Panacur) at the same dosage used for helminths (e.g. hookworms).
Albendazole (Valbazen) at 25 mg/kg has been used...but can induce bone marrow
toxicity, so should be used with caution...other treatments that have also been
used (in dogs) include QUINACRINE (6.6 mg/kg PO BID x 5 days) and METRONIDAZOLE
(22 mg/kg PO BID x 5 days). CONTROL OF GIARDIA INFECTION involves preventation
of fecal contamination of feed & water supplies and sanitation and disinfection
of the environment with Lysol (2-5%), Sterinol (1%), or chlorine bleach (1%).

Giardia lamblia (synonymous with Lamblia intestinalis and Giardia duodenalis) is a flagellated protozoan parasite that colonises and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. The giardia parasite attaches to the epithelium by a ventral adhesive disc, and reproduces via binary fission. Giardiasis does not spread via the bloodstream, nor does it spread to other parts of the gastro-intestinal tract, but remains confined to the lumen of the small intestine. Giardia trophozoites absorb their nutrients from the lumen of the small intestine, and are anaerobes. If the organism is split and stained, it has a very characteristic pattern that resembles a familiar "smiley face" symbol. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

Coccidia are microscopic, spore-forming, single-celled parasites belonging to the apicomplexan class Conoidasida. Coccidian parasites infect the intestinal tracts of animals, and are the largest group of apicomplexan protozoa. Coccidia are obligate, intracellular parasites, which means that they must live and reproduce within an animal cell. Coccidiosis Coccidiosis is the disease caused by coccidian infection. Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of animals, caused by coccidian protozoa. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces, or ingestion of infected tissue. Diarrhea, which may become bloody in severe cases, is the primary symptom. Most animals infected with coccidia are asymptomatic; however, young or immuno-compromised animals may suffer severe symptoms, including death. While coccidian organisms can infect a wide variety of animals, including humans, birds, and livestock, they are usually species-specific. One well-known exception is toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
